Again, Google has launched a new service that will either please or scare you. It’s Google’s Latitude’s Location History and Location Alerts.  Location History tracks where you have been at any point in time, while Location Alerts notifies you whenever you are near a friends location – that way you can easily contact that friend and perhaps arrange a meet-up at a designated place.

googlelatitude

Google Latitude’s Location History lets you store, view and manage your past Latitude locations. You can even visualize this on Google Maps or Google Earth for a more pleasant view of where you have been at some point in time.  If you don’t like this service, you can always delete it from your Google Latitude account.

Google Latitude’s Location Alerts on the other hand uses your past location history to establish a pattern or routine of the places you’ve been, excluding your home or office locations. Alerts will be sent to you and any nearby friends when Latitude recognizes that you are an unusual place or routine at an unsusual time.

If you want to enable this feature, check out google.com/latitude/apps. Of course, you need to have a Google Latitude account to use this feature.

Microsoft is rolling out the new Bing Videos site aimed at bringing a new unified online video destination.  The new Bing Video site combines Bing’s video search engine and MSN video site.

bingvideo

In addition, the new Bing video site also lets you access videos across the web including those videos from MSN video, Hulu, ABC, and YouTube.This practically translates to over 900+ T.V. shows

Bing videos was also re-organized to make it easier to navigate through the different video content and find the exact videos that you want to watch. And to make your video viewing session more pleasant, you can always turn on the “dim the lights” feature and enjoy watching videos online.  Great if you have that new iMac  or a MacBook hooked up on a 52″ Samsung plasma Tv.

Twitter lists have been introduced just a couple of weeks ago and it is still not really clear to many people how the lists can be used. Let’s take a look at just three examples of how the lists can turn useful:

1. Create a Group Tweet Widget

Say you are part of some team or a community and you want to create a collaborative widget of what you all Tweet about. Twitter lists can be a perfect way to do that:

  • Go to Twitter List Widget generator;
  • Provide your user name, list name and title (Setting tab);
  • Customize the look and feel (Preferences, Appearance and Dimensions tabs);
  • Grab the code and let your team members add it to their personal pages and blogs:

List Widget Settings

Here’s what we have for our Search and Social team:

2. Subscribe to Lists by RSS

What can be a better use of a Twitter list than the ability to stalk the group of people more effectively. While Twitter (surprisingly) doesn’t allow to subscribe to a list by RSS, there are already external tools for that!

TwiterList2RSS is a good example:

  • Just create the list of people you really want to subscribe to (be very selective);
  • Grab the list link;
  • Go to the tool and provide the list link:

Here’s an example of our collective S&S Twitter list:

Twitter List RSS

3. Monitor Popular Lists, Promote Lists

There will be plenty of Twitter lists directories and trackers, right now we already have one good example – Listorious. The site tracks popular and new lists as well as allows to share your own lists:

  • Find popular media lists;
  • Find popular news lists;
  • Find popular marketing lists;
  • Search Twitter lists;
  • See most popular tags;
  • Submit your own list!

Google’s again in the news today as they closed the developers’ preview of their new search architechture known as Caffeine. First announced back in August Caffeine caused quite a stir in the marketing community. Given that Google putting a new logo is enough of a newsworthy event for a large part of the search marketing world the new search algorithm was close to a sensation.

For those of us who might have been too busy doing SEO and somehow missed the news Caffeine is a next-generation search architecture for Google that’s supposed to be faster and more accurate, providing better, more relevant results and crawling larger parts of the web. Of course the biggest question for most of us is not how fast the new Google is but how high our websites will rank in the new index. Until now we were able to check our sites positions in Caffeine at http://www2.sandbox.google.com/ but now it says:

Thank you!

We appreciate all the feedback from people who searched on our Caffeine sandbox.

Based on the success we’ve seen, we believe Caffeine is ready for a larger audience. Soon we will activate Caffeine more widely, beginning with one data center. This sandbox is no longer necessary and has been retired, but we appreciate the testing and positive input that webmasters and publishers have given.

So it’s official. Google Caffeine is going live and taking all the changes with it. If you’ve been monitoring your sites rankings in Google Caffeine you may expect your site to appear at same position in Google. Anyway don’t be surprised to see your sites rankings dance around a while – that’s Caffeine coming.

I’ve been following the rankings of a few sites in Caffeine vs Google with Rank Tracker. There were significant differences so I guess I’ll be able to tell that Caffeine is live when the actual Google rankings come close or coincide with the last checked Caffeine positions. Sure I’ll keep you posted.

Good luck and may your sites rank high in the new Google.

As you look to get ahead of the recovery and set yourself up for success in 2010, let’s revisit some of the lessons learned during the recession that you can apply going forward. We’ve been compiling both forward-looking perspectives and retrospective wisdom on our Fast.Forward. channel on YouTube. In this week’s post, we want to call out some advice from Rick Carpenter of the agency DDB in Chicago.

From Rick’s perspective, the recession underscored the fundamental truth in marketing: you need to continually, and earnestly, focus on the customer. This means understanding what’s going on in their lives and what their mindset is, and it’s critical to be relevant to the people that the message will reach.

The recession also taught us that marketers must retrench and commit to their own fundamental core values. Your brand and company shouldn’t continually have to reinvent itself to adapt to the macro-economic climate. As you prepare for 2010, is your positioning clear?

Listen to what Rick has to say here:

Alerts are a great way to stay on top of changes in your account. In addition to the account alerts already available for billing and campaign maintenance, you can also use custom alerts to monitor shifts in key metrics like clicks and cost. We’d like to tell you about two additional alert options that we’re introducing today.

First, we’ve added alerts for new keyword and budget ideas in the Opportunities tab. Ideas are personalized tips to help you potentially improve your campaigns’ effectiveness. New ideas are usually generated for campaigns and ad groups every few weeks, but you may miss ideas that can expand your coverage and boost your traffic if you don’t check the Opportunities tab regularly. Now, when there are new ideas available for your review, you’ll see them highlighted along with the rest of your campaign alerts.

Second, if you’re using AdWords conversion tracking, you can now create custom alerts for changes in conversion volume, conversion rate, and cost per conversion. By setting alerts for your conversion data, you can make sure that you’re quickly notified about fluctuations in your key metrics.

Please note that we’re still working to bring custom alerts to all linked accounts for My Client Center (MCC) users. In the meantime, you can still set custom alerts for your individual accounts if you’re able to log into them directly.

We’re excited to announce that publishers based in Greece can now receive their AdSense payments via Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT). You’ll need to ensure that you’re opted into local currency reporting in order to sign up for this payment method.

Selecting EFT as your payment method will allow you to receive your payments more quickly. Rather than waiting for checks to arrive in the mail and clear in your bank account, your earnings will be deposited directly into your bank account. We’re fans of EFT, and so our teammates Vijay and Elizabeth have created a video about it. Have a peek:

Finally, if you’re located in a country where EFT isn’t yet available, rest assured we’re working hard to offer additional payment options. Stay tuned to Inside AdSense, where we’ll be sure to announce any new payment methods.

Popular newsletter to run online auction.

LuxuryNames.comLuxuryNames.com will hold an online domain auction November 18-24 on the Snapnames platform.

LuxuryNames.com is known for its once-or-twice monthly newsletters with domain names for sale. The recently-launched newsletter has resulted in over $250,000 in sales over the past three months.

The auction will include about 200 domain names, and 80% of the reserves will be $1,500 or less. The catalog will include .com, .net, and .org domain names, with a focus on .com. Domains were selected based on SEO, age, quality, and price. The catalog is nearly finalized and will be released this Wednesday. Initial domains include refinancecalculator.com, autoloancalculator.com, debtcollection.net, drumsets.org.

It will be interesting to see the company move beyond its newsletters to an auction format. The company isn’t doing this for an immediate payoff; it is not charging a commission to sellers above the SnapNames commission.

Submissions are no longer being accepted for this month’s auction, but LuxuryNames will accept submissions for future auctions. If all goes well, and if the company can get enough quality domains, it hopes to hold an online auction quarterly.
