If you’re fond of shooting videos when you review new products that you’ve purchased and upload them on YouTube, you might want to make it better next time. Why? Because Google Product Search may get those videos and have them featured  as one of the results for the Google Product Search.

videoproductreview

Although Google will most likely prioritize professionally produced videos from USA Today, Wired and Digital Trends, the announcement however does say that YouTube videos can be considered as well for as long as those are relevant and of high-quality.

Videos of product reviews appear above the Similar Items when you do a Google Product Search.

If you like your videos to be included in Google Product Search, make sure to do the following when you upload them to YouTube:

Add the “youtube” attribute to your data feed. In this attribute include the YouTube video ID for each one of your products with a related YouTube video review. Video IDs are the values that follow the ‘v=’ in the YouTube URL of the video.

Include UPC, ISBN, brand, and MPN information in the tag of your YouTube video review.

Google is not just going to let Apple dominate the news today with their new product announcement and Steve Jobs re-apperance on Apple’s stage. And so Google announced a big enhancement (literally) – the famous Google Search Box just got bigger.

googlebigsearch

It’s a simple enhancement, no effect whatsoever on Google’s searching capability or functionality. Google is just making a statement here, stating the obvious – Google is all about search and it is but proper that the search box should look bigger. Aside from the bigger search box, Google is also making the  search terms you enter larger as well as the search suggestions that appear when you time your search terms.

The announcement was made by none other than Google’s Marissa Meyer. And she ended it by saying:

“Google has always been first and foremost about search, and we’re committed to building and powering the best search on the web — now available through a supersized search box.’

The address bar is where you see the full URL of the current page. This is the only bar in FireFox I always have in front of my eyes (I may have some of the bars hidden when I need more space but this one is always active).

It is therefore obvious I want to enhance its functionality, and here are a few awesome tips to share:

1. Search from the address bar:

This is one of my favorite FireFox About:Config hacks:

By default FireFox searches Google if you type any word in the address bar and hit "Enter". You can change it to any other search engine (your favorite site, keyword suggestion tool, other):

  • In the address bar type about:config;
  • In the filter type keyword.URL
  • Click twice and enter search string, e.g. let it be Google trends: http://www.google.com/trends?q=

Address bar search

You can also use smart keywords search as well as Cyber Search addon to search from the address bar.

2. Send Tweets right from the Address Bar:

InstantTweets turns your browser address bar into a cool, space-saving Twitter client: instantly send pages, pictures and tweets to Twitter by just typing them in the address bar and hitting "Enter":

InstantTweets

3. Turn your Address Bar into a social bookmarking tool:

There are a number of powerful FireFox addons uniting multiple social bookmarking services, ShareAHolic being my personal favorite. It adds a tiny icon right to your address bar allowing to share current URL in all of your often-used sites. Of course, you can add and delete any of the sites to make sure it lists only your favorite ones:

Shareaholic - addressbar

4. Turn your browser address bar into the progress bar

Fission combines address bar and progress bar (Safari style). This makes the progress bar more visible and allows for a nice visual effect.

5. Instantly see each page server location:

FlagFox displays a country flag representing the location of the current website’s server and provides quick access to detailed location and web server information.

There are many pros for social media. You can use social media to augment traditional public relations and communications strategies. You can build a profile and a brand and reach a wider audience. You are more engaging and can communicate directly with customers and the public. Your employees can provide value well beyond the 9 to 5 work hours. Social media has become necessary to fill the void as the media/newspapers have closed down or cut reporting staff recently. You can supplement existing partnership capabilities with tools such as podcasts, Twitter, LinkedIn and Facebook to accelerate the sharing of knowledge, increase teamwork and enhance communication between co-workers.

Now for the cons. In early 2009, through weak passwords, hackers gained access to high-profile accounts such as Fox News network and Barack Obama causing online identity issues. If you are storing access to clients’ websites, passwords or any personal information on a laptop or mobile device; this information can be misused if your device is stolen. Also, stolen devices can allow unauthorized people to get access to your social media profiles. From a legal aspect, user behavior can allow a company to lose close control of sensitive information and tarnish their public image. Closely linked accounts (when a post is immediately syndicated to other social media accounts) are especially dangerous because the speed and ease of posting plus the replication and distribution of data makes it impossible to take something back once you’ve posted it.

As a result of the cons, a number of useful tools, applications and policies have formed to help us manage the security risks of social media networking while still allowing employees to invest themselves in it. For the small businesses just starting to be aware of the ramifications of unfettered social media access, there are tools that can help your IT department understand where data is stored, how it is handled and who has access. Companies must create a corporate social media strategy that includes policies, standards and guidelines. Use automated password reset programs. Use log compilation to stay on top of possible breaches (compiling syslog output).

A secure portal approach like the U.S. Army’s allows companies to keep all data safe and also enables the Army to block sensitive information, such as classified information or GPS coordinates, from being circulated. Make sure all laptops and/or mobile devices have passwords, encryption and tracking software in case they are stolen. Look for products such as McAfee Network Data Loss Prevention and McAfee Host Data Loss Prevention. (Please note: I have not used these products and am not offering a personal endorsement – these are just the type of products that you will want to look for).

What is not a suitable reaction is to implement URL filtering to block access to websites such as LinkedIn and Twitter. Instead protect your data by educating your employees and users. Historic data patterns give us the ability to prevent future data losses, use these patterns to implement effective user education programs. Trying to block access to these websites is just going to cause employees to find ways to go around your filters, thereby increasing the load on your IT department.

Social media is here to stay and there are ways to deal with the risks involved. Education is a priority; don’t shut something down just because you don’t understand it. Educate yourself, your company and your employees and put the power of social media behind you. Use it to your advantage.

In July we announced US beta testing of the Opportunities tab, a new section in your AdWords account designed to help you find additional cost-effective traffic for your search campaigns.

Today we’ve begun expanding the beta to additional US advertisers, and we’ve also started including UK and Australian advertisers in the test. We’ll make the Opportunities tab beta fully available to all English-language accounts over the next few business days.

Now that we’re expanding the beta, we’d like to answer a few questions we heard during the initial test:

When should I use the Opportunities tab?
You can think of the Opportunities tab as your homepage for account optimization. You can use the tab to get a quick overview of Google’s customized keyword and budget ideas for your campaigns and ad groups. You can also compare the impact of different ideas before making changes. So, if you’re looking to increase your keyword coverage for a specific product, or have your ads appear more often for your existing keywords, the Opportunities tab is a great place to start.

We regularly update our list of ideas, so even if you’ve visited the Opportunities tab in the past, you may want to check back every few weeks to see if your keyword or budget ideas have changed.

Where did my AdWords Tools go?
We’re not retiring any of the existing AdWords tools with the Opportunities tab beta test, but we’ve changed where they’re found. If you’re included in the Opportunities tab beta, you’ll no longer see a Tools tab. Instead, you can access AdWords tools by clicking on the Opportunities tab and scrolling down the menu on the side of the page. You can also see lists of ideas by campaign by clicking on any of your campaigns listed in the menu on the left side.

To see a full list of available tools, simply click the “More tools…” link at the bottom of the list.

What optimization tools will I see in the future?
This beta test of the Opportunities tab is just a starting point for a broader set of optimization tools we hope to provide in the future. Over the coming months you can expect to see additional changes to the tab focused on giving you more insight into the broader search marketing landscape and more data to help you better estimate the effectiveness of new ideas.

Ultimately we want the Opportunities section of your account to evolve into a single destination you can visit whenever you want to get new ideas for increasing your ad coverage on relevant search terms, capturing additional clicks in your most profitable campaigns, or simply improving your overall ROI.

We plan to expand the Opportunities tab beta to all global advertisers over the coming weeks, and we’ll continue working on improvements to the tab on an ongoing basis. In the meantime, if you have any suggestions for improving account optimization, please let us know by submitting feedback in your account.

This Saturday, our engineers will be performing routine site maintenance from 10am to 2pm PDT. You’ll be unable to log in to your AdSense and Ad Manager accounts during this time, but we’ll continue serving ads to your pages and tracking your clicks, impressions, and earnings as usual. In addition, your ad targeting won’t be affected.

We’ve converted the maintenance start time for a few cities around the world:

Ottawa - 1pm Saturday
London - 6pm Saturday
Kolkata - 10:30pm Saturday
Manila - 1am Sunday
Auckland - 5am Sunday

If you’d like to learn more about what goes on during these maintenance periods, check out this Inside AdSense post.

There’s only one way to go: Up.

When Domain Name Wire first reported that one and two character .biz domain names would be released, we had an unscientific poll to estimate how much the domains would sell for.

Generally speaking, most people believe two character .biz domains will sell for under $5,000 and one characters will sell for under $10,000.

Now that the initial RFP process for .biz domains has completed, .biz registry NeuStar has teamed up with Sedo to auction off any unclaimed names.

Michael Berkens asked for predictions of sales prices on his blog. The first commentor wrote:

“If these domains sell for really low I think this could bring down another useless tld to its knees.”

to which Berkens responded:

“Isn’t the opposite true as well? If these domains go for more money than the domainer community expects it could bring new life and interest to the extension. I think lawyers.biz sold a few TRAFFIC shows ago for like $3K, so the extension for domainers has pretty much been dead for a while, so think there is more upside than downside for the Sedo.com auction.”

I tend to agree. The auction can only be a boon to the extension. If the domains sell for less than people expect, no one will pay attention. If they sell for more, people will pay lots of attention to the extension and aftermarket sales could see a little lift. Either way, some of these domains will get developed, which will ultimately create some buzz for .biz.
