Sedo posted its weekly sales results with over $700,000 worth of domains in total. The top sales this week were Rent.co.uk for $103,000 (65,000 GBP) and AdMedia.com for $50,000.

Andrew Allemann of Domain Name Wire believes whoever has taken charge of AdMedia.com is trying to make a play on Ad.com, the disputed trademark that has been creating quite a mess.

Other notable sales include Hacker.de for $32,000 (€22,000), CapeVerde.com for $31,000, Zoost.com for $25,500. QMed.com for $20,000, and Science.org for $20,000. Check out the full list of results after the jump…

Group sends our RFP for whois abuse study.

ICANN, through Generic Names Supporting Organization (GNSO), is seeking proposals from qualified companies to study whois abuse. One of its proposed mechanisms for studying abuse is to set up a number of test domain names to see what happens to the whois data created for them.

A similar study (pdf) was conducted in 2007, but only to research whois harvesting for spam. In the new study, GNSO will also check for postal/phone solicitations, phishing, and identity theft.

A number of scams are perpetrated using e-mail addresses harvested from whois. Two popular ones are the renewal scam — which seeks to get you to transfer your domain to another registrar — and the domain appraisal scam. Whois data is also used for marketing. Even large companies have used whois data for marketing in the past; I once received a mailing from Yahoo addressed using whois contact information.

I have long proposed having a registry, or even ICANN-level domain masking service. This would mask all registration email addresses as domain.tld@verisign.com or similar, and would forward all mail to the domain owner. This would allow the registry or ICANN to shut down scams. (Although this probably isn’t a responsibility they’d like). Doing this would require a thick-whois model.

More information on ICANN’s RFP is here.

Playing around in Reddit tonight I found several threads being attacked by what appears to be an XSS (cross site scripting) virus. If you go to these threads and view the code being put out by the script, it will take over your commenting and replies for the thread outputing the same code.

The best thing to do now if you are a Reddit user is to install No Script for Firefox.

Update: From Reddit

They seem to have converted some javascript code into html escaped characters and got the browser to interpret it somehow. When I open my received messages it instantly tries to post a reply to every message on that page thus spreading itself.

Edit – there was a submission to programming earlier today (I think) that I can no longer find that had a similar if much less sophisticated attack. That one relied on people being stupid enough to copy and paste the code into the brower address bar. I suppose someone found an exploit and used his idea.

Decoding the script which is URL encoded gives us this;

Un-encoded it looks like;

[
]czo4OlwiW3hdW2JdDQpcIjt7WyYqJl19[
]

Seems like the comment spam detector is removing the vast majority of it. Don’t be suprised if reddit goes down from this though.

Google introduced a new logo today to celebrate its 11th birthday since the company was first started back in 1998 by two Stanford students. In the logo, the “L” in Google is replaced by an eleven “11″, spelling out Google as “Goog11e”.

If you click on the Google logo, it takes the user to the search results page of “google”, sporting a special Google 11th Birthday element in the search query field of the URL :
http://www.google.com/search?q=google&ct=11th_birthday&oi=ddle

The Google results themselves make for a nice highlight and timeline of the company, listing Google products and services which have launched over the past 11 years, including Google Adwords, Blogspot, Google Maps, GMail and Google Video. It’s pretty amazing that in only 11 years Google has become the technology powerhouse that it now is, and I firmly feel that Google has a long way to go, especially as they focus on cloud computing, mobile, operating systems and global broadband connectivity.

Last year for its 10th birthday, Goolgle launched a 10 year Google timeline to celebrate, I hope they make some updates to it this week :)

Happy 11th Birthday Google!
