So I was online via my beloved Ogo and decided to check out some Domain Parking services. I typed-in (yes mobile type-in exists!) #companyname#.mobi to navigate to the sites. If you are using a mobile device, you often do that because you expect content when typing in a .mobi domain of an existing business.
To my surprise almost none of the parking services had a mobile-ready page or mobile content. Sometimes the .mobi domain doesn’t even belong to the company!
Here’s my quick check:
Just one company (Sedo) offers a mobile-ready website (Scored 5 at ready.mobi). I do not expect a full blown .mobi website. GoDaddy.mobi is also just enough to check domains, its perfectly suited for GoDaddy. But ignoring mobile surfers? And don’t bring up that “revolutionary” iPhone that will make mobile-ready sites useless. For a long time Opera Mini has been offering what the iphone offers only now. Still, not everyone is using Opera Mini or an iphone and cell phone rates are still quite expensive for mobile surfing. Oh and I forgot to mention slow connection speed. There’s a need for leightweight and adapted mobile websites.
activeaudienceSedo has been voted as one of the TOP 100 best places to work in Germany by financial magazine Capital.
Main criterias were credibility, respect and fairness of the managment towards employees as well as identification with the company and team spirit.
Sedo is ranked #59 of the TOP 100. The full alphabetical list can be seen here (german).
Congrats Sedo!
CapitalI won’t debate about Network Solution’s fiasco regarding their questionable front running techniques, you can read all about this here at NamePros, DomainState, Domain Name News (1), Domain Name News (2), Slashdot , Domain Tools.
There’s even recorded video proof of Network Solution’s Domain Name Front Running:
Really bad karma for Network solutions. There’s a storm of bad PR blasting the net and hitting Network Solutions!
Instead I’d like to show you a genius domain related to this:

Nothing really spectacular for a Sedo user but it shows how easy it is:
Mid december 2007 Google announced its Wikipedia competitor “Knol” (what a name…). My guess is that it will be a huge “success” like Google Checkout (lesson: bad idea to come up with an alternative to a monopoly — especially years later — even when you’re Google) and that only people who also buy iphones will cheer (sorry for the sarcasm
).
But what is funny is that the domain Knol.com doesn’t even belong to Google. It’s owned by a dutch cleaning company that sells vacuum cleaners and steam cleaning equipment. They’re pretty happy about the additional free traffic they receive and even thank Google for that on their site:
Knol Stoomreinigingssystemen wil o.a. de volgende sites bedanken : Google
040 Hosting
nu.nl
Webwereld
TechCrunch
BlogoscopedDe aandacht is echt overweldigend !
Translation: “Knol steam cleaning systems wants to thank the following sites (among others ) […] the attention is really overwhelming!”
How can a company in the internet age decide on a product name without checking the associated domains first? All these people who type-in “www.knol.com” and only find vacuum cleaners? Tsk tsk tsk
Oh and respect for their sys admin - the site is still up despite the traffic.
